About Dane Watkins


Dane is currently working on a practice based PhD that explores the survey as artistic practice and how communication technologies and database management systems can be used as a material by artists as well as project evaluators within the field of cultural production at Falmouth University.

Previous Research Projects

'Augmenting Impact with Social Media'

explored how social media could be employed effectively to understand, document and develop the long-term impact of performance work that takes place outside the traditional context and conventions of the theatre space;


researched ways in which Superfast Broadband could help craft micro-businesses to improve access to global markets and forge new relationships with audiences, customers, makers and suppliers.


Dane Watkins started eatmydata in 2002 and has over a decade's experience of a research based, context-responsive practice that examines how conventional drawing and animation practices can be developed and shown in digital environments such as the web, computer driven installation, hand held devices and pervasive media.

In the past few years eatmydata have developed an extensive body of drawings, animations and interactive surveys that reveal audience motivations through experimentation with transactional media.

eatmydata developed SoLa a data visualisation of solar photo voltaic panels that enabled the householder to see their energy production and consumption over hours, days and months. eatmydata worked with Western Power and Siemens to develop the interface for android tablets.


Dane Watkins trained in animation at Liverpool Polytechnic (graduating in 1993), concentrating on hand drawn animation for film. Since then he has developed his work through using vector-based digital tools, undertaking commissions and international residencies, and by distributing work online.

Dane Watkins was lead artist on the Whose Data? project at Knowle West Media Centre. Whose Data is an artistic investigation into how local communities can make the most of their data streams.
